August Mushroom Walk with Chef Spike Mikulski Smithfield, RI

  • Mowry Conservation Area 41-199 Old Forge Road Smithfield, Rhode Island, 02917 United States (map)

Members, your next fungal adventure begins in the August woods.

Join the Rhode Island Mycological Society and Chef Spike Mikulski for an exploration of Mowry Conservation Area. Spike’s specialty is the genus Amanita, a diverse group that includes some of the forest’s most recognizable mushrooms.

We will search for Amanita species and whatever other fungi the season brings, learning to read the clues around us: cap and gill features, stems and veil remnants, nearby trees, substrate, habitat, and even the weather! Each discovery offers another way to understand how fungi live within the forest community.

No previous experience is needed. Bring your curiosity, and come prepared for approximately two and a half hours outdoors on woodland trails.

This is an educational mushroom walk, not an edible-mushroom foraging event. Registration is required, and space is limited.
